A composite rather than a client. The pattern shows up often enough to be worth writing down, the owner is invented, and no business is named.
Say an owner has been paying a monthly fee for what the engagement called strategic finance support, and has been doing so for the better part of a year.
There are calls. The calls are pleasant and they feel useful. Asked what has actually arrived, the owner cannot name a single thing.
The books are kept by a different desk and have fallen months behind. There is no forward cash view anywhere. The last thing that could fairly be called an object is a deck from the opening month.
Nothing was ever defined at the start. The engagement named a category, both sides filled in the blank differently, and neither noticed for months because the calls kept feeling worthwhile.
Vagueness is comfortable right up until the moment somebody actually needs something.
The first move is naming what ought to exist, in writing. A closed month by a stated date. A cash view refreshed whenever the month closes. A decision about who keeps the books, because a split file with a gap in the middle is how a backlog like that builds up.
From there the fee buys things you can point at, and the calls sit on top of those instead of standing in for them.
A named list with dates against it, agreed before anything begins, and a first closed month to check the list against.
Nobody's engagement is described above. The owner and the fee are invented, and the pattern is the real part.
Naming what arrives is ordinary work and it needs no CPA credential, and this desk holds none. Firms that hold one keep the audits, the reviews, the compilations and the assurance reports. If the object you were promised is one of those signed reports, you will be told at the naming stage and the rest of the list waits. The unabridged version lives on the disclosures page.

A named object gives you something to hold, and it gives the desk something to finish. Vague engagements drift because nothing inside them is ever actually done.
Breadth is one desk holding the books, the filings and the return, so there is no gap for a backlog to disappear into. Height is the read, which only becomes possible once something real is arriving underneath it.
I was paying for support and could not say what I got. What I wanted was something I could point at.
You will be talking to the Steven Palmieri practice. A sentence about the arrival name is enough to start.
